Hello, and welcome to another Sovereign Soul blog! With the impending release of Book One: Akin Minds, some of you might be wondering: why is it written in Acts and Scenes?
This is a choice people questioned every step of the way since I began writing, and the answer is simple. It makes the format of Sovereign Soul that much easier.
Each Act takes place in a world. A few important worlds take place over two Acts. Later on, multiple points of view take place in a single act. However, the narrative is centered largely on Ryoku’s journey and what world he’s currently in. Sometimes the focus does change, and I try to accommodate that in each Act.
Within each Act is about 5-7 scenes, each about the length of a standard chapter in other fiction. These usually stick to the same narrative, and often they follow a certain flow.
For example, Act One of Akin Minds. Scene One is Ryoku’s arrival in the bar. Scene Two is their preparation for a journey. Scene Three involves a harrowing trip through the woods. Scene Four involves meeting Sira and continuing through the woods. Scene Five ends their forest journey and marks their arrival in the Capital. Scene Six is their decisive moment and the conclusion to the first Act, and offers the turning point into Act Two.
So, no. Sovereign Soul doesn’t run like a script, but like a general novel in a different format. Maybe you’ll consider differentiating from the norm and writing your own novel in a new way. Remember: it’s your novel.
