Setting Excerpt – Blog #17, July 10th, 2019

Today, I wanted to talk about a feature I use in my book with the Acts and Scenes concept. Unsure what else to call it, I dub it the Setting Excerpt.

In the eyes of Ryoku Dragontalen, we are in
the Fallen Unicorn Inn, in the world of Harohto
It is late noon
On November 7th, 2017.

This is my take on announcing the POV character, setting, and time at the beginning of each scene.

The first line obviously begins with whose point of view the scene is in. I only do a few other points of view in the first book, and especially in the last few Acts.

Following that is a rough or exact location in the respective world. Later on, some characters might be in other worlds, or this could announce their arrival in a new world before the characters figure it out themselves.

The last two lines are just as important. Due to Ryoku having a deadline, the date is highly important in Akin Minds. Using the time in conjunction with that lets the reader know exactly how much time is left for him to accomplish his goals.

This is the most brief version of this system I’ve developed to state the location, and I’ve decided it in favor of letting everything sort itself out.
