Hello all! I’m picking up my character blogs from where I left off in Sovereign Soul Book One. So far, I’ve covered the main characters in the first part, one villain, and one minor character, as well as a fan favorite from Serpent Empire. This one’s an interesting one – Rex Dougo, the hybrid.
Our heroes meet Rex in Lysvid, the world crawling with vampires and constantly under cover of night. Rex often isn’t too sure what side to take in war between the werewolves and vampires, neither of which accepts him. After ignoring the brawl and choosing to help save Ryoku, Rex takes the group to the only one in Lysvid who has ever accepted him: the Timeless One.
Many characters in Sovereign Soul stem from Defenders of Laia or Legendlore, but Rex is an exception. Rex is actually one of the main characters in the stand-alone book Misjudged. For Rex, Sovereign Soul takes place almost a thousand years after his death. He’s a spirit in the spirit realm, but was born human. His actions in life led to his identity in the spirit realm and his isolation from humanity.
Rex undergoes a vivid change of character between Misjudged and Akin Minds. In Misjudged, Rex stumbles upon Sariah Leusasie escaping from the Crown after being wrongfully charged in the murder of her mother and sister. Misgivings occur, and Rex is shown to be less than honest about himself and his intentions. Of course, the story isn’t that simple, and Rex and Sariah weave a complex tale between them of truth and deceit, but the core of his choices changes his soul forever.
Prior to Akin Minds, Rex was a loner in Lysvid and constantly caught between the gang wars. The Timeless One enjoys taking in lost souls, and so Rex has been an apprentice of his for some time. However, after Rex meets Ryoku and is inspired to embark on his own journey, the Timeless One is ready to let his crow leave the nest.
Rex harnesses a unique array of abilities. His vampiric and werewolf blood attribute to much of his brute strength, endurance, and sheer speed and senses. However, Rex does not need to intake blood, nor does he turn into a wolf on full moons. His curse is attuned to him in other ways that manifest themselves differently. Rex also bears one more curse from his time in the land of the living; a thieves’ mark in his right hand, rendering that hand almost useless. His left hook more than makes up for his weakness.
Rex joins Ryoku on part of his journey, but his redemption leaves him with only one true goal in mind: to find Sariah Leusasie and atone for his sins.
