Rex Dougo – Blog #40, November 25th, 2021

Hello, and welcome back to a Sovereign Soul character blog! Today I’ll be talking about a character I’m sure I mentioned before – Rex Dougo!

Far from a simplistic human, Rex Dougo is a hybrid of werewolf and vampire condemned to the world of Lysvid. He insists his fate is a punishment from when he was alive, as he is a character from another series of mine, Misjudged. It means that he, like many others of the cast, is a spirit originally from the land of the living, which adds a wealth of complexities to him – but let’s start simple, shall we?

Rex is about 6 feet tall, with black hair and scarlet eyes. He dresses commonly in black, has pale skin, and his left hand is marked with a hole straight through his palm – a thieves’ mark, a punishment given to those who stole from his past life. As it stands when Ryoku and the others meet him for the first time, Rex is universally hated by both vampires and werewolves. While Lysvid is in a world of eternal night, most werewolves are stuck in their wolf form, but Rex can freely change. Since he has that freedom and reeks of werewolf, both clans spit upon his name.

There is one vampire who will take Rex in – the Timeless One, an odd vampire who takes in people who have strayed from their paths and acts as a mentor and protector to them. Relus and Cleria, both other pupils of his, have come to accept and befriend Rex as well, though the latter has a tougher time with it. After meeting Ryoku, though, Rex decides to leave his home in search of someone from his past, a search that takes him to Syaoto with them.

In Misjudged, Rex’s original story, he competes with a man named Devin Maytrough for the affections of one Sariah Leusasie, a girl wrongfully framed for the murder of her mother. Their story is wrought with deceit and half-truths, as Rex and Devin are brothers and members of the royal family. While Devin tries to convince Sariah to turn herself in, Rex helps her elude the law and live the life of a renegade. Though we aren’t clear on how their story ended, it seems Rex has a lot to make up for from his past – and that starts with finding Sariah.

Though his heart is largely accounted for, Rex is known to be a pansexual and doesn’t necessarily attach sexual acts to romance. It’s only in his new life that he finds the stigmatism of his orientation all but gone, and he is free to be who he is without lurking in the shadows.

Despite his dark and brooding appearance, Rex keeps quiet usually only by choice, and has a strong moral compass while uncaring of lawful repercussions of his actions. His friends and affections are most important to him, with matters of family landing dead-last. Even where his vampiric defenses and werewolf hardiness cannot protect him, he’ll readily step in front of extreme dangers to protect those close to him.

Rex fights prominently with his good fist and his legs. His mix of vampiric and wolfish strength gives him strong combat abilities and senses, as well as the ability to turn into his wolf form without fully lusting for blood. He suffers from poor sight and cannot use his marked hand without experiencing severe pain. However, his defenses against the elements are superhuman, and his willpower may surmount even that.
