Hey all! Today I’m continuing my character posts section with another prominent character in Sovereign Soul, Legendlore, and Defenders of Laia – Katiel Fereyen!
I’ll start with discussing how he appears in already published Sovereign Soul: Akin Minds. He first appears in Act Five in Bonnin, apparently having waited for Ryoku. He travels mainly with four of his ‘friends’ who consider themselves Guardians: Eckhardt Bright, Artos Ninjasta, Kaia Oceyen, and Mayfield Summers. While Ryoku’s only beginning his Defender journey, Katiel has been at it for some time and is well-established, though he never stays around to celebrate his accomplishments. He has long red hair that he pins the bangs back of, gold eyes, and dresses in cool-looking robes of usual reds and blacks.
Like some other Sovereign Soul characters and Defenders, Katiel is descended from a long history established back in Defenders of Laia. As an established Defender, Katiel has already unearthed most details about his past life. Many Defenders are descended from past lives – a good chunk of the main group is descended from the heroes of Laia.
Many of the specifics from Laia are currently cloudy, but we know Katiel was the first scientifically-created Omega. He hails from the kingdom of Selenzora and has buried High Elven blood, giving him something of a natural gift with magic. His four friends are some of his closest friends he made in Laia.
His main enemy, Roland Demizen, is the one who turned him into an Omega in the first place, a mad scientist experimenting with the human race and mortality. At the time, Roland became fascinated with Katiel’s strategic mind after the intelligent mage outwitted him time and time again, and eventually kidnapped and drugged him to instill the prototype Omega gene into his DNA.
As the first Omega, Katiel is the host of a vengeful spirit called Cerberus, a force which constantly drives him to get stronger and absorb more power. If he is unable to keep it in check, the natural form of Cerberus awakens – a great and powerful monster rivalling the might of Feldaga. Years of practice and deep study have meant Katiel can change any part of his body into that of another entity – arms, legs, lungs, even his brain. However, he must know the entity inside and out, which means Katiel has a highly intelligent and structured mind, at least attributable to his Omega. Much of his off time is spent studying new creatures anatomically, familiarizing himself with their bodies inside and out, and becoming able to turn into them himself. Combined with his natural magic, Katiel is a very powerful character.
In the physical world, Katiel is often much more relaxed, though his Omega gene has awakened a need to be constantly stronger. He spends much of his time gaming or helping out his friends. In Legendlore, Katiel is known as Cam (his lost mortal name) and is most well known for his infinite game trivia. As a whole, Katiel is calm, collected, friendly, and can chat up a storm with those he’s comfortable with. His vast intellect and startlingly clear memory often leave many other characters dumbfounded, though his closest four friends still insist he’s a dumbass.
Morally, he is the Defender of the group least comfortable with the idea of killing his enemies, and prefers simply to grow as strong as possible so every possible enemy fears going up against him. In current writings, since he’s much stronger than Ryoku’s current problems, he prefers to work on the sidelines and assist where he can. He is a good friend to Ryoku, but delayed in telling him about his past, confident that Ryoku was better off if he didn’t know.
