Sabrina Gallagher – Blog #83, November 15th, 2024

She may look like the quintessential ‘hot librarian’, but don’t let her appearance fool you – Sabrina Gallagher is far more than a pretty face behind a pair of rimmed glasses. With her sharp intellect, emotionally awkward demeanor, and a pencil skirt as crisp as her mind, Sabrina adds a new dynamic to Ryoku’s journey in Book Three. Armed with a massive tome of forbidden knowledge and the guts to keep Kai in check, Sabrina is stepping into the spotlight in Sovereign Soul: Book Three.

Welcome to the second character blog leading up to the title drop and cover reveal on November 21st! If you missed the last one, I introduced the mischievous Sariah Leusasie and gave a glimpse of the chaos she’ll bring to Ryoku’s world. Whether you’re new to the series or eagerly awaiting the next book, I’ve got all the behind-the-scenes goodies right here. Catch up on the first book Akin Minds here, and the second, Embers of Orden here if you haven’t already – and now, let’s talk about Sabrina!

Sabrina isn’t your typical adventurer. She prefers books over battles, lab coats over armor, and logical plans over spur-of-the-moment heroics. With long blond hair tied back in a no-nonsense ponytail, bright blue eyes behind her glasses, and a taste for conservative clothes like pencil skirts and cardigans, Sabrina is the quintessential quiet professional. Her appearance earns her Kai’s label of the ‘hot librarian’, but she’s far too focused on her work to care much about what others think.

At first glance, Sabrina comes across as shy, awkward, and emotionally stinted. However, beneath that exterior lies a deeply caring individual – someone who’s spent years building walls around her emotions and is learning to open up. Though she’s a scientist to the core, Sabrina’s heart is in the right place. She’s hard-working, a little socially clumsy, and completely out of her element when it comes to relationships, especially with someone as unpredictable as Kai.

Sabrina’s journey began long before Ryoku crashed into her. Prior to Embers of Orden, she was responsible for developing the nanotechnology that gathered Orden’s intel on Ryoku. But as the events of the books unfolded, Sabrina had a change of heart, feeding intel to the rebellion. She played a pivotal role in the climactic infiltration of Orden, working closely with Ryoku and Kai, risking everything to ensure the mission’s success.

Now, Sabrina finds herself out of the lab and on the road, carrying more baggage than she’d like – in both senses of the word. The biggest surprise? Her unexpected relationship with Kai, Ryoku’s carefree friend and notorious womanizer. Their pairing may seem odd at first, but Kai’s sardonic nature helps Sabrina loosen up, while she keeps him grounded (and in line). When Kai acts up, she’s not afraid to whack him with her massive tome – the Book of Shadowhearts. And those who know Kai from Embers of Orden may be waiting for a tumultuous secret to hit the spotlight…

One of the most intriguing things about Sabrina is her complete absence of magic. In a world where magic flows through everything, Sabrina stands apart – it doesn’t affect her, and she can’t wield it. This unique trait makes her a wildcard in dangerous situations, leaving her reliant entirely on her wits and knowledge.

Her new companion on this journey is the Book of Shadowhearts – a colossal tome filed with all recorded knowledge on the enigmatic Shadowhearts. Though Sabrina doesn’t fight herself, this book serves two purposes: a source of invaluable information about their rising foes, and a heavy weapon to keep Kai from crossing any lines.

In Sovereign Soul Book Three, Sabrina steps out of the background and into a more active role on Ryoku’s journey. Her keen intellect and unwavering dedication will prove critical as the stakes rise and the mysteries surrounding the Shadowhearts, and their ominous foe, deepen.

Mark your calendars for November 21st next week – that’s when the title drop and cover reveal for Book Three will go live!
