Bestiary

The world of Sovereign Soul and its surrounding stories contains many sorts of monsters. Some are purely monsters. Some walk in the likeness of humans. Others, still, bear no shape whatsoever. Here is a document detailing the monsters of Laia, the Spirit Realm, and all else.

Shadowhearts

“Shadowhearts… are a creature of a different sort. Some say they are the souls of the departed, twisted and forced to walk in our realm as monsters. Others still say they are a different sort of creature altogether, arrived from realms unlike our own.”

Silhouette
The most basic form of Shadowheart. Appears like a small humanoid with pointed ears and claws. One could almost dispel them by sneezing too harshly.

Brawn
Big, dumb Shadowhearts of whom are easy to fool, but strike like a brick. Forget to dodge their charge, and you may be flattened. They are quick for their size.

Grabber
Long and gangly Shadowhearts which use their long, dull claws to latch onto the backs of unsuspecting victims. Struggle freeing yourself long enough, and you may wind up lunch.

Gokri
Survivors of the Complex Shadow Breed, scientifically bred over a thousand years ago. They are capable of high magic and can overwhelm even the most ready opponents. They appear to be shadowy octopi that have spread to land.

Mystic
Appearing like floating cloaks with rimmed, pointed hats, and unusually colored red. They are capable of high magic without the necessity of preparing such spells.

Keeper
Cursed ones that take up the form of Shadowhearts and protect locations. Once upon a time, they were called ones of the Gallian race.

Hound
Dog-like, fast Shadowhearts that excel at pouncing and pinning their enemies, then ripping them apart with fierce fangs.

Fragments
Powerful, unique Shadowhearts that often lead a pack or army. They keep the form of their past lives and are usually locked in a trance-like state of reliving their past, but at the lowest point of their lives. Examples include the return of the Laian Greater Demons, as well as many shifted forms who were once human.

Wildlife

“In magic lands, even the common wildlife may differ greatly from that of the common world.”

Ragul
Bear-like creatures that are mossy-green in color, with floppy ears and a nasty temperament when angered. Though dangerous, they tend to ignore humans.

Imp
Too small to be considered a proper demon. They stand like miniature humans with forked tails and little horns. Though inferior, they can cause a nasty burn with fire magic.

Wyvern
Not quite the monstrous form Wyverns are made out to be. Ranging from small, flying lizards to great beasts of several stories high, they are generally peaceful unless provoked. The only rule of a Wyvern is that they have no upper arms. The rest differentiating them from dragons is fair game.

Selk
Tall, wide-antlered deer that frequent deep forests. Their mossy coats make them a hunting craze, but they are usually too perceptive to fall for simple traps.

Humanoid

“The vast multitude of races in the spirit realm is beyond the comprehension of many, and in just as many varieties.”

Vampire
Males have granite skin and crushing fangs, while females seduce their prey with sharp claws. Sunlight and garlic are mythical weaknesses; they only die to poison and werewolves.

Werewolf
Most are like humans, but can change into wolves at night. Most are not unreasonable. Trapped in their wolven state, however, may induce insanity.

Orc
Considered the most monstrous of humanoid races. Simple-minded but extraordinarily strong. Easily manipulated.

Elves
Their height and sizes vary, but they are normally nimble and silver-tongued. Magic is as a second nature to them.

Dwarves
The only thing all dwarves have in common is their minute size. They value minerals and the earth, but vary in savageness and honor.

Gallian
The part-lion race, protectors of the land. Excellent predators and highly honorable.

Typhoenexian
Part-bird race, considered dexterous and flighty. Will do little without a price.

Arozian
The water tribe. Part-fish people with varying attitudes to other races. Very nimble, and equally intuitive and elusive.

Grey Elf
A smaller race of elves considered highly elusive and rare, they seldom interact with humans. Those who do are considered ‘sullied’ and banished from their tribe.

Nephilim

“Some monsters are considered too savage to be a part of human society. Either their way of life is simply too violent, or people wish to avoid association with them altogether.”

Manticore
Fearsome results of monstrous breeding. Head and body of a lion, tail of a scorpion. Manticores tend to frequent the desert or jungle and seldom stray from their large hunting grounds once established. They are an apex predator, as little in their turf can compete with their untold might. Their prey is usually consisting of mammals ranging in size, but nothing compares to its hunger for human flesh.

Warg
A werewolf can turn a regular wolf with their venom, turning them into unreasonable savages who only wish to kill. They have no other form than their savage wolf form. Often in werewolf culture, it is deemed a cardinal sin to create such a warbeast, but exceptions can be made in the heart of war – especially on losing grounds.

Dragon
Proud and noble creatures, but stubborn. In the spirit realm, they ignore worldly magic and defy the regular construct of worlds. However, targeted magic can be their undoing. The most powerful dragons were eradicated eons ago.

Relict

“There are some among monsters that are more than just a monster. They are monstrous, yet that which they have control over is deemed godly or ultimately fearsome. Often they don’t even dabble in human affairs – we are far below their ilk.”

Rune Golem
Truly titanic creatures. Rune golems are entities that wander the greatest of mountain peaks and resemble them in size. Usually made of dark stone and laden with runes at their joints. None are sure where they congregate, or why, but they march a singular path. People can climb into them as passengers, but doing so is extremely risky and, alas, it’s very difficult to even find one.

Leshen
Protectors of the forest and master illusionists who care for little else. They create fog that induces illusions to confuse the foe before swooping in for the kill.

Autreugher
A legendary monster affiliated strongly with winter and the hunt. It appears as a large snow leopard and stands the height of a human. Those few who have reported seeing the legendary beast have swiftly experienced great loss, or else lost their own lives.

Umbrahar
A mythic Syaotoan type of monster supposedly dwelling in places deep beneath the earth. Impossibly fast, winged, and extremely difficult to track and kill. Accounts detail it as having huge, batlike wings and no discernible facial features – except for a mouth of razor-sharp fangs.

Chimera
A scientifically engineered creature formed from other living things. Their appearances are as varietal as there are animals in the realms, but even greater.

Ruinous Serpent
In the seas of the eternally storming world, a supermassive sea serpent guards the waters. None truly grasp the size or depth of the ocean, and t

Demons

“Demons are to the spirit realm as humans are to the land of the living – infested. Insanely numerous. And overall bad news.”

Common

Demons come in all shapes and sizes. Similar to Shadowhearts, but older, and they are quite physical. Horns, wings, different hues, heights, sizes, and shapes – nothing is off the table. The only thing they have in common is that any adventurer worth his salts can eradicate them. Just… they keep returning.

Greater

Uncommon enough that many of them take on names which strike fear into the hearts of men. Zuroon, for example, the demon of greed, or Bysoar, the demon of sacrilege. Infamous enough that just as many fear them as those who try to borrow their might.

Hybrid

As is common with all races, demons mingle with other breeds. Humans aren’t even off the charts. A half-demon used to be exceedingly common. Today, few still exist, and they battle with their true natures just like any human – only, the difference is life or death.

Archaic

Archaic demons so closely resemble humans that they may appear as them if they wish. A few key features tend to separate them. A wing here, a claw there, or a horn there. Sometimes, all of the above. Not only are they superior to regular ilk, they practically spit upon their names.

Royalty

As like humans, demons have their own hierarchy. The King of Demons will likely reign for at least a millennium should their leadership remain uncontested, which is quite rare. However, it takes quite a contest to unseat a King of Demons. The family spreads to cover some infamous demons married into the family, such as the horrific spider Ariadne.
